Gambian First Lady, Fatoumata Bah-Barrow Hails General Buratai’s Agricultural, Self-Sufficiency Initiative

First Lady of The Gambia, Mrs Fatoumata Bah-Barrow, has commended former Nigerian Chief of Army Staff and Ambassador to the Republic of Benin, Lieutenant General Tukur Yusufu Buratai, for his commitment to advancing food production and self-sufficiency in Africa.
During her visit to Gen Buratai’s Tukur and Tukur farms on Sunday, November 3, 2024, Mrs Bah-Barrow praised his innovative agricultural model, which includes livestock, dairy, and crop cultivation. “What I witnessed today is a testament to dedication and vision,” she remarked. “At first, I saw the General as solely a military leader, but today, I see him as a champion for all humanity.” She added that his integrated farming approach reflects a deep understanding of sustainable living, and his commitment to empowering communities is truly inspiring.

Mrs Bah-Barrow expressed a desire to see similar initiatives implemented across Africa to help alleviate hunger and foster unity. She suggested The Gambia as a pilot project, where its smaller size and population could showcase the benefits of self-sustaining practices. She also invited General Buratai to deliver a lecture on practical agricultural techniques, with a special focus on applications in military settings.

In response, Ambassador Buratai, who holds the traditional titles of Betara of Biu and Garkuwan Keffi, shared that his journey in agriculture began when he was a young officer with the rank of Major. His dedication to this cause continued throughout his military career, culminating in his establishment of the Nigerian Army Farms and Ranches during his tenure as Chief of Army Staff. This initiative has since grown into a significant contributor to Nigeria’s GDP and exemplifies how retired individuals can make lasting contributions to society.

Together, leaders like Buratai and Bah-Barrow are demonstrating the power of innovative approaches to food security and leadership, paving the way toward a more sustainable future for Africa. The highlight of the visit included a tour of the farm’s diverse facilities, featuring snakes, poultry, greenhouses, and production lines for baked goods, bottled water, and the renowned Arwasky yogurt. Mrs Bah-Barrow was joined by Deputy Head of Mission Abdoulie Hydara, Deputy Permanent Secretary Anna Jobe, and First Secretary Mr. Babucarr Dubumya from the Gambian High Commission.
