At a celebration of Nigeria’s budding literary talents, elder statesman and former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Ambassador Babagana Kingibe, honored Ambassador Tukur Yusufu Buratai for his outstanding commitment to advancing youth leadership and education in Nigeria. Speaking at the 2024 Young Adult Literature Prize Award Ceremony hosted by the TY Buratai Literary Initiative (TYBLI), which he chaired, Ambassador Kingibe praised Buratai’s dedication to inspiring the next generation of leaders through literature and critical thinking.
Recalling his own experiences in public service, Ambassador Kingibe commended the transformative initiatives introduced in the Nigerian Army under Buratai’s leadership as Chief of Army Staff, where a research-driven approach enhanced the Army’s operational and intellectual foundations. He emphasized the enduring importance of literature in fostering communication and intellectual development, stating, “Technology cannot erode the power of the written word.” Pledging his ongoing support for TYBLI’s programs, Kingibe reinforced his commitment to empowering young Nigerians. Lieutenant General Tukur Yusufu Buratai (Retired), former Chief of Army Staff and the event’s Chief Host, echoed Kingibe’s sentiments, emphasizing the power of writing as a tool for personal and professional growth. Reflecting on his school days and involvement with literary clubs, Buratai noted, “Writing is essential for expanding knowledge, vision, and communication skills. Leaders need to express themselves well, and for that, they must write.” He added that documenting ideas can lead to positive societal change, aligning with TYBLI’s mission to cultivate critical thinking and self-expression among Nigeria’s youth.
Held at the Tukur Buratai Research Centre in Gora, Nasarawa State, the award ceremony honored young writers from across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones. Zonal winners received N250,000 each, while the grand prize of N1 million was awarded to Taofeek Olatunbosun, who expressed deep appreciation to TYBLI and Ambassador Buratai, pledging to promote literary excellence as an advocate for the initiative. In his closing remarks, Buratai extended gratitude to partners, including Hajiya Hauwa Aliyu and the British Council. He also hinted at future plans to broaden TYBLI’s reach by enhancing prize offerings and exploring scholarship opportunities for secondary and tertiary students.
The TY Buratai Literary Initiative continues to empower Nigeria’s youth, equipping them with critical thinking, writing, and communication skills—qualities essential for future leadership.
